Emphasis with "Do," "Does," and "Did": When Auxiliaries Add Force

Do, does और did का emphatic use सीखें — affirmative sentences में ज़ोर, correction, insistence और polite emphasis कैसे बनता है।

English Grammar , Writing Skills 4 min read

English में do, does, और did सिर्फ questions और negatives के लिए नहीं होते। कभी-कभी ये affirmative sentence में emphasis यानी ज़ोर जोड़ते हैं।

I do like grammar. (ज़ोर: सच में पसंद है!)
She does work hard. (ज़ोर: आपके doubt के opposite)
He did complete the assignment. (ज़ोर: उसने सच में पूरा किया)

इस structure को अक्सर emphatic do कहा जाता है। यह writing और speech दोनों में useful है।

Rule box: Affirmative statements में emphasis जोड़ने के लिए do/does/did + base verb use करें। Tense और person do/does/did में दिखते हैं; main verb हमेशा base form में रहता है।

Pattern:

Subject + do/does/did + base verb

Examples:

I do agree.
She does understand.
They did arrive on time.

जब कोई गलत assumption करे, emphatic do correction को stronger बनाता है।

“You don’t like grammar.” — “I do like grammar!"
"She doesn’t work hard.” — “She does work hard!"
"He didn’t finish.” — “He did finish!”

यहाँ meaning है: Actually, you are wrong; the statement is true.

जब speaker अपनी बात को firm बनाना चाहता है, do/does/did force add करते हैं।

I do appreciate your help. (I really do)
She does know the answer. (believe me)
He did try his best. (I assure you)

Without emphasis:

I appreciate your help.

With emphasis:

I do appreciate your help.

Second sentence warmer और stronger लगता है।

Formal writing में भी emphatic do use हो सकता है, especially polite insistence या strong confirmation के लिए।

I do request that you consider this matter carefully.
She does possess the required qualifications.
He did fulfil all the requirements.

यह structure थोड़ा formal या deliberate tone देता है। Everyday writing में overuse न करें।

Imperative में Do + base verb command/request को stronger, warmer या more polite बना सकता है।

Do be careful! (Be careful से stronger)
Do come to the party! (warm invitation)
Do sit down! (polite insistence)

यहाँ subject usually hidden होता है: you.

Do be careful. = You do be careful.

Use do with I/you/we/they and plural subjects:

I do believe you.
They do need help.

Use does with he/she/it/singular subject:

She does work hard.
This method does help.

Use did for all subjects:

I did call you.
She did reply.
They did finish the task.

Main verb stays base form:

✅ She does like music.
❌ She does likes music.

✅ I did go there.
❌ I did went there.

WrongRightWhy
She does likes grammar.She does like grammar.Do/does/did के बाद base verb।
I did went there.I did go there.Did already past tense दिखाता है।
He do work hard.He does work hard.Third person singular = does।
They does agree.They do agree.Plural subject = do।

❌ He did completed the work.
✅ He did complete the work.

Did past tense दिखा देता है; main verb base रहेगा।

Do you like grammar? (question)
You do like grammar. (emphasis)

Position से meaning बदलता है। Question में auxiliary subject से पहले आता है; emphasis में subject पहले रहता है।

हर sentence में emphatic do लगाने से writing unnatural लगेगी। इसे तब use करें जब correction, contrast, insistence या special force चाहिए।

Normal: She works hard.
Emphatic: She does work hard, even if people don’t notice.

Correct form चुनें।

  1. I ___ like grammar! (do/does)
  2. She ___ work hard. (do/does)
  3. He ___ complete it. (did/does)
  4. Error spotting: She does likes music.
  5. Error spotting: I did went there.
  6. Error spotting: He do work hard.
  7. Fill in: ___ be careful! (Do/Does)
  8. Fill in: I ___ appreciate your help. (do/did)
  9. Rewrite with emphasis: She knows the answer.
  10. Choose: ___ come to the party! (Do/Does)

  1. do — first person।
  2. does — third person singular।
  3. did — past emphasis।
  4. She does like music. — base form।
  5. I did go there. — base form।
  6. He does work hard. — third person।
  7. Do — imperative emphasis।
  8. do — present emphasis।
  9. She does know the answer.
  10. Do — imperative।

Rule: Do/does/did + base verb = emphasis. Tense/person do/does/did में होता है; main verb हमेशा base form में रहता है। Use it to correct, insist, or add force.

Memory trick: Do adds force. Does for third person. Did for past. Base verb always.
