Stative Verbs: Why You Can't Say "I Am Knowing"
Stative verbs समझें — know, have, love, believe, taste जैसे verbs continuous tense में कब नहीं आते और कब meaning बदलने पर आ सकते हैं।
English learners अक्सर continuous tense को हर present action के लिए use कर देते हैं। लेकिन कुछ verbs action नहीं, state बताते हैं। ऐसे verbs को stative verbs कहते हैं।
❌ I am knowing him.
✅ I know him.
❌ She is having a car.
✅ She has a car.
Stative verbs usually continuous tense में नहीं आते, क्योंकि वे ongoing action नहीं बताते; वे condition, thought, feeling, possession या perception बताते हैं।
Rule box: Stative verbs states बताते हैं — thoughts, feelings, possession, senses, existence. ये usually simple tenses लेते हैं, continuous नहीं। कुछ verbs stative और active दोनों हो सकते हैं, meaning के आधार पर।
Simple idea:
✅ I know the answer. (state of knowledge)
❌ I am knowing the answer.
ये verbs mind की state बताते हैं।
I know the answer. (not “am knowing”)
She believes in hard work.
He understands the problem.
They remember the incident.
I think you are right. (opinion)
She doubts his intentions.
जब think opinion बताता है, simple tense use होता है:
✅ I think this is correct.
❌ I am thinking this is correct.
Feelings generally states हैं, इसलिए simple tense common है।
I love this song.
She hates waiting.
He prefers tea to coffee.
They want to leave.
I need your help.
She fears the worst.
Informal speech में I am loving this जैसे forms सुनाई देते हैं, लेकिन standard grammar में:
✅ I love this.
⚠️ I am loving this. (informal/emphatic)
Ownership या possession बताने वाले verbs continuous में नहीं आते।
She has a car. (not “is having”)
He owns a house.
They possess great wealth.
The book belongs to me.
This box contains important documents.
Common Indian-English error:
❌ I am having two brothers.
✅ I have two brothers.
जब sense verbs किसी quality या perception को state की तरह बताते हैं, simple tense use करें।
This soup tastes delicious.
The flower smells wonderful.
She looks tired. (appears)
It feels cold outside.
I hear a noise.
इनमें adjective आता है, adverb नहीं:
❌ This tastes well.
✅ This tastes good.
कुछ verbs existence, cost, weight, appearance जैसी states बताते हैं।
The problem exists.
The building stands on a hill.
This costs fifty rupees.
The box weighs two kilos.
It seems correct.
She appears nervous.
❌ This is costing fifty rupees. (general price के लिए wrong)
✅ This costs fifty rupees.
कुछ verbs meaning बदलने पर continuous में आ सकते हैं। यही advanced part है।
