"Used To" vs "Be Used To": Same Words, Different Grammar
Used to और be used to का अंतर past habits, familiarity, gerunds, common mistakes, exam traps और practice questions के साथ समझें।
“Used to” और “be used to” almost same दिखते हैं, इसलिए learners इन्हें mix कर देते हैं:
गलत: I am used to wake early.
सही: I am used to waking early.
लेकिन यह compare करें:
सही: I used to wake early.
दोनों sentences में “used to” है, लेकिन grammar अलग है। Used to + base verb past habit या past state बताता है जो अब true नहीं है। Be used to + noun/gerund familiarity बताता है: कोई चीज़ experience की वजह से normal लगती है।
यह difference writing, speaking, error spotting और fill-in-the-blank questions में important है क्योंकि “to” के बाद आने वाला word पूरी तरह बदल जाता है।
- Used to + base verb = past habit या past state.
- Be used to + noun / -ing form = किसी चीज़ से familiar होना.
- Get used to + noun / -ing form = familiar बनना.
Rule box: Past habit वाले used to के बाद base verb use करें। Be/get used to के बाद noun या -ing form use करें।
Compare करें:
I used to live in Jaipur.
I am used to living in Jaipur.
पहले sentence का मतलब है: मैं past में Jaipur में रहता था, पर शायद अब नहीं।
दूसरे sentence का मतलब है: Jaipur में रहना मेरे लिए normal है।
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| subject + used to + base verb | I used to play football. |
| subject + did not use to + base verb | She did not use to like tea. |
| did + subject + use to + base verb | Did you use to live here? |
Questions और negatives में “did” के साथ usually use to आता है, used to नहीं।
सही: Did you use to play cricket?
Speech में common लेकिन exams में avoid करें: Did you used to play cricket?
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| subject + am/is/are used to + noun | She is used to the noise. |
| subject + am/is/are used to + -ing | I am used to waking early. |
| subject + was/were used to + noun/-ing | They were used to working late. |
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| subject + get/gets/got used to + noun | You will get used to the climate. |
| subject + get/gets/got used to + -ing | He got used to driving on the left. |
इन questions को order में पूछें:
- Sentence का meaning है “past में regularly होता था, अब नहीं”? Used to + base verb.
- Meaning है “यह चीज़ familiar या normal है”? Be used to + noun/-ing.
- Meaning है “familiar बनना”? Get used to + noun/-ing.
- “Used” से पहले be का कोई form है? फिर “to” के बाद base verb मत लगाएँ।
- पहले “did” है? Careful grammar में use to use करें, used to नहीं।
I ___ sleep late during college.
यह past habit है। Correct: I used to sleep late during college.
I am used to ___ late.
यहाँ “am used to” है, इसलिए next word -ing form होना चाहिए। Correct: I am used to sleeping late.
Did you ___ live near the market?
यहाँ “did” है, इसलिए base form use करें। Correct: Did you use to live near the market?
-
I used to wake early.
Past में मैं regularly early उठता था। शायद अब नहीं। -
I am used to waking early.
Early उठना मेरे लिए normal है। -

Past situation; शायद अब वह वहाँ काम नहीं करती। -
She is used to working under pressure.
Pressure में काम करना उसके लिए familiar है। -

Noun phrase के साथ familiarity. -

Familiarity time के साथ develop होगी।
“To” tricky है क्योंकि इसके दो roles हो सकते हैं।
Used to + base verb में “to” infinitive-like structure का हिस्सा है:
used to wake
used to play
used to live
Be used to में “to” preposition है। Preposition के बाद noun या gerund आता है:
used to noise
used to waking
used to working
इसलिए यह sentence wrong है:
गलत: I am used to wake early.
“Am used to” के बाद noun-like form चाहिए:
सही: I am used to waking early.
Used to और would दोनों repeated past actions describe कर सकते हैं।
When we were children, we used to play outside.
When we were children, we would play outside.
लेकिन used to actions और states दोनों के साथ काम करता है:
I used to have long hair.
She used to know everyone in the village.
“Would” usually past states के साथ natural नहीं है:
Awkward: I would have long hair.
बेहतर: I used to have long hair.
इसलिए अगर sentence past state describe कर रहा है, used to safer है।
गलत: I am used to wake early.
सही: I am used to waking early.
“Am” structure बदल देता है। Sentence familiarity के बारे में है, past habit के बारे में नहीं।
Standard exam grammar में “did” के बाद base form use करें:
सही: Did you use to study here?
सही: I did not use to drink coffee.
Casual speech में कुछ लोग “did you used to” बोलते हैं, लेकिन कई tests इसे wrong मानते हैं।
I am used to the heat.
I am getting used to the heat.
पहले का meaning है heat already normal लगती है। दूसरे का meaning है process अभी चल रहा है।
Present habits के लिए “use to” मत लगाएँ।
गलत: I use to go to the gym every day.
सही: I go to the gym every day.
सही: I usually go to the gym every day.
| गलत | सही | क्यों |
