"Will" vs "Would": Future, Habit, and Polite Meaning

Will और would का अंतर future meaning, past habit, polite requests, hypothetical results, reported speech, common mistakes और practice questions के साथ समझें।

कई learners will और would को सिर्फ same word के present और past forms मान लेते हैं। यह partly true है, लेकिन पूरा rule नहीं है।

गलत: When I was a child, I will play outside every evening.
सही: When I was a child, I would play outside every evening.

यहाँ “would” future नहीं बता रहा। यह repeated past habit बता रहा है। किसी दूसरे sentence में यह politeness दिखा सकता है:

Would you like some tea?

और conditional sentence में यह imagined result दिखा सकता है:

If I knew the answer, I would tell you.

इसलिए real difference सिर्फ time का नहीं है। Will usually real future, willingness, promise, prediction और present decision से जुड़ा है। Would distance बनाता है: past distance, polite distance, या imaginary distance. यह idea समझ आते ही ज़्यादातर errors आसान हो जाते हैं।

Will = future action, prediction, promise, willingness, instant decision.
Would = past habit, polite request/offer, hypothetical result, future seen from a past point.

Rule box: Real future या present willingness के लिए will use करें। Past, polite, imagined, या reported future meaning के लिए would use करें।

Compare करें:

I will help you.
I would help you if I could.

पहला sentence real और direct लगता है। दूसरा sentence imagined condition पर depend करता है।

“Will” और “would” modal verbs हैं। इनके बाद main verb का base form आता है।

Modal के बाद -s नहीं लगाते:

Choose करने से पहले यह method use करें:

Sentence real future action या present decision के बारे में है? Will.
Promise, willingness, या prediction है? Usually will.

Condition unreal है: “If I knew.” Correct: I would tell you.

I ___ send the file tonight.

यह real future promise या decision है। Correct: I will send the file tonight.

He said he ___ meet us at the station.

Reporting verb “said” past में है। Correct: He said he would meet us at the station.

I will finish the work today.
Real future plan या promise.
I would finish the work today if I had time.
Imagined result.
Will you attend the meeting?

Hypothetical question.

Polite offer. “Will you like tea?” tea offer करने के लिए natural नहीं लगता।

Reported speech में future-in-the-past.
If he apologises, I will forgive him.
Real possible condition.
If he apologised, I would forgive him.
Less real या imagined condition.
The door will not open.
इसका meaning refusal या failure हो सकता है: कोशिश के बावजूद door open नहीं हो रहा।

कई exam errors real और unreal conditions mix करने से आते हैं।

“If” के बाद verb clue देता है। अगर condition में “knew,” “had,” “were,” या कोई past-looking form unreal meaning के साथ है, result में usually would चाहिए, will नहीं।

गलत: If I knew, I will tell you.
सही: If I knew, I would tell you.

लेकिन हर “if” के बाद “will” avoid मत करें। Real conditions में main clause में “will” सही है:

If I get time, I will call you.

“Would” repeated past actions describe कर सकता है:

During summer vacations, we would visit our grandparents.

लेकिन past states के साथ यह कमजोर होता है। States के लिए used to usually better है।

बेहतर: I used to have long hair.
Awkward: I would have long hair.

Past habit के लिए “would” usually clear past-time setting मांगता है, जैसे “when I was a child,” “in those days,” या “during college.” Setting न हो तो reader इसे hypothetical समझ सकता है।

“Will you like” future preference पूछता है, normal offer नहीं।

Time marker “when we were children” real future meaning को block करता है।

Unreal past results के लिए would have + past participle use करें।

Final rule: Will direct और real है: future, promise, prediction, willingness. Would distant है: past habit, politeness, reported future, और imagined result.

Memory trick: will = real, would = remote.
