Confusing Words , Exam Grammar 5 min read

Classroom में एक पुराना correction बहुत सुनने को मिलता है:

Student: Can I leave the room?
Teacher: You can, but may you?

Joke पुराना है, पर grammar point काम का है। Can मुख्य रूप से ability या practical possibility बताता है। May permission या formal possibility बताता है। रोज़ की English में लोग permission के लिए “can” भी बोलते हैं, लेकिन formal writing और exams में difference समझना ज़रूरी है।

  • Can = ability, capacity, skill, या practical possibility.
  • May = permission, polite/formal permission, या uncertain possibility.

Rule box: Ability के लिए can। Formal permission के लिए may

Compare करें:

He can speak three languages.
May I speak now?

पहला sentence ability बताता है। दूसरा permission मांगता है।

“Can” और “may” modal verbs हैं। Modal verbs का basic pattern यह है:

PatternExample
subject + modal + base verbShe can solve the problem.
modal + subject + base verbMay I enter?
subject + modal + not + base verbStudents may not enter without permission.

Modal verb के बाद main verb का base form आता है।

सही: He can speak English.
गलत: He can speaks English.

AbilitycanI can swim.
Informal permissioncanCan I borrow your pen?
Formal permissionmayMay I leave early?
Rule-based prohibitionmay notVisitors may not enter this area.
General possibilitycanAccidents can happen anywhere.
Uncertain possibilitymayIt may rain tonight.

“Can” और “may” चुनते समय यह method लगाएँ:

  1. Sentence ability या skill के बारे में है? Can use करें।
  2. Formal permission मांगनी या देनी है? May use करें।
  3. Casual spoken permission है? Can acceptable है।
  4. Rule, notice, या instruction है? May / may not बेहतर है।
  5. Possibility है? General possibility के लिए can, specific uncertain possibility के लिए may

___ you swim across the river?

यह ability है। Correct: Can you swim across the river?

___ I submit the form tomorrow, sir?

यह formal permission है। Correct: May I submit the form tomorrow, sir?

गलत: May you swim?
सही: Can you swim?

“May you…?” ability पूछने का normal structure नहीं है। यह blessing में आ सकता है, जैसे “May you succeed,” लेकिन वह अलग use है।

Conversation में “Can I leave?” normal है। लेकिन formal grammar questions में, अगर meaning permission है, तो may safer answer होता है।

Informal: Can I leave?
Formal: May I leave?

  • May not = allowed नहीं है।
  • Cannot / can’t = able नहीं है, possible नहीं है, या context के हिसाब से allowed नहीं है।

You may not park here. = Permission नहीं है।
I cannot lift this box. = Ability नहीं है।

General possibility के लिए can:

Too much sugar can harm your health.

Specific uncertain possibility के लिए may:

The train may be late today.

“Cannot” normally एक word में लिखा जाता है। “Can not” rare contrast में आता है, पर usual writing में cannot बेहतर है।

Correct: I cannot attend the meeting.
Common informal: I can’t attend the meeting.
