Linking Verbs and Subject Complements: When Verbs Don't Act

Linking verbs जैसे be, seem, become, look, taste, feel सीखें — और समझें कि इनके बाद adjectives क्यों आते हैं, adverbs नहीं।

English Grammar , Writing Skills 4 min read

❌ She looks beautifully.
✅ She looks beautiful.

❌ The food tastes well.
✅ The food tastes good.

कुछ verbs action नहीं दिखाते। वे subject को किसी quality, state या identity से जोड़ते हैं। ऐसे verbs को linking verbs कहते हैं। Linking verbs के बाद subject को describe करने के लिए usually adjective आता है, adverb नहीं।

Rule box: Linking verbs (be, seem, become, appear, look, sound, taste, smell, feel, grow, turn, remain, stay) subject को subject complement से जोड़ते हैं। Subject complement अगर quality बताता है, तो adjective use करें, adverb नहीं।

Pattern:

Subject + linking verb + subject complement

Examples:

She is intelligent.
He seems tired.
The soup tastes delicious.

इन sentences में complement subject के बारे में information देता है।

VerbExample
beShe is a teacher. / She is intelligent.
seemHe seems tired.
becomeShe became a doctor.
appearHe appears nervous.
lookShe looks happy.
soundThat sounds interesting.
tasteThe soup tastes delicious.
smellIt smells wonderful.
feelThe fabric feels soft.
growHe grew impatient.
turnThe leaves turned red.
remainShe remained calm.
stayPlease stay quiet.

Compare करें:

She looks beautiful. (adjective — “she” को describe करता है)
She sings beautifully. (adverb — “sings” action को describe करता है)

The food tastes good. (adjective — “food” को describe करता है)
He cooks well. (adverb — “cooks” action को describe करता है)

Test: अगर verb subject की condition, quality या state बता रहा है, adjective use करें। अगर verb action बता रहा है और word action को modify कर रहा है, adverb use करें।

She is happy. (happy = adjective, subject को describe करता है)
She works happily. (happily = adverb, action को describe करता है)

Subject complement वह word/phrase है जो linking verb के बाद आता है और subject को complete करता है।

She is happy.
He became a teacher.
The room smells fresh.

यह complement subject के बारे में बताता है, object नहीं होता।

She seems tired.
The plan sounds risky.
He remained silent.

Linking verbs nouns भी ले सकते हैं:

He became a teacher. (noun complement)
She is a doctor.
They remained friends.
He turned traitor.

WrongRightWhy
She looks beautifully.She looks beautiful.Linking verb के बाद adjective।
The food tastes well.The food tastes good.Food को describe करना है।
He feels badly about it.He feels bad about it.Feeling/state subject की है।
That sounds interestingly.That sounds interesting.Sound यहाँ linking verb है।

Note: “He feels badly” का rare meaning हो सकता है कि उसकी touch करने की ability खराब है। लेकिन “He feels bad” का normal meaning है कि वह दुखी/गिल्टी महसूस कर रहा है।

Adverbs अक्सर -ly पर end होते हैं, लेकिन linking verb के बाद adjective चाहिए।

❌ The idea sounds nicely.
✅ The idea sounds nice.

Good adjective है; well usually adverb है।

The soup tastes good.
He writes well.

लेकिन health के meaning में well adjective भी हो सकता है:

I am well. (healthy)

कुछ verbs context के अनुसार linking या action verb बन सकते हैं।

She looked happy. (linking — appeared happy)
She looked carefully at the painting. (action — looked carefully)

The dog smelled bad. (linking — dog की smell bad थी)
The dog smelled the food carefully. (action — smelling action)

Correct form चुनें।

  1. She looks ___. (beautiful/beautifully)
  2. The soup tastes ___. (good/well)
  3. He seems ___. (happy/happily)
  4. Error spotting: She looks beautifully.
  5. Error spotting: The food tastes well.
  6. Fill in: He ___ a teacher. (is/became)
  7. Fill in: The fabric feels ___. (soft/softly)
  8. Rewrite correctly: She sings beautiful.
  9. Choose: He remained ___. (calm/calmly)
  10. Choose: That sounds ___. (interesting/interestingly)

  1. beautiful — linking verb के बाद adjective।
  2. good — soup को describe करता है।
  3. happy — subject complement।
  4. She looks beautiful.
  5. The food tastes good.
  6. is / became — दोनों noun complement के साथ correct हो सकते हैं।
  7. soft — fabric को describe करता है।
  8. She sings beautifully. — यहाँ sing action verb है, इसलिए adverb।
  9. calm — adjective।
  10. interesting — adjective।

Rule: Linking verbs subject को complement से जोड़ते हैं। Quality बताने के लिए इनके बाद adjective आता है, adverb नहीं। Adjective subject को describe करता है; adverb action को describe करता है।

Memory trick: Linking verbs link to the subject. Adjectives describe subjects. Adverbs describe actions.
