Verb Grammar , Confusing Words 2 min read

“Lie” और “lay” को अंग्रेज़ी का सबसे confusing verb pair माना जाता है। कारण: “lie” का past tense “lay” है — जो “lay” का present tense भी है।

  • Lie = लेटना (intransitive — कोई object नहीं). “I lie down.”
  • Lay = रखना (transitive — object चाहिए). “I lay the book down.”

Test: क्या verb के बाद “something” आ सकता है? अगर हाँ → lay. अगर नहीं → lie।

PresentPastPast Participle-ing
lie (लेटना)lielaylainlying
lay (रखना)laylaidlaidlaying

“Lie” का past tense “lay” है:

Today I lie on the bed. (आज मैं लेटता हूँ।)

Yesterday I lay on the bed. (कल मैं लेटा था।)

I have lain on the bed for hours.

  • Lie = recline (दोनों में “i”). कोई object नहीं।
  • Lay = place (रखना). Object चाहिए।

गलतसही
I’m going to lay down.I’m going to lie down. (कोई object नहीं)
She lied on the bed.She lay on the bed. (lie का past = lay)
He has laid in bed all day.He has lain in bed all day.

⚠️ “Lied” = झूठ बोला (different verb). “Lie” (लेटना) का past “lay” है, “lied” नहीं।

  1. I’m going to ___ down for a nap. (lie/lay)
  2. She ___ the baby in the crib. (lie/lay)
  3. Yesterday I ___ on the sofa all afternoon. (lie/lay)
  4. The workers have ___ the foundation. (lie/lay)
  5. Please ___ the documents on my desk. (lie/lay)

  1. lie — कोई object नहीं, लेटना
  2. laid — object = baby
  3. lay — lie का past tense
  4. laid — lay का past participle
  5. lay — object = documents

  • Lie = लेटना (intransitive). Forms: lie–lay–lain–lying.
  • Lay = रखना (transitive). Forms: lay–laid–laid–lying.
  • “Lie” का past tense “lay” है — यही मुख्य confusion का स्रोत है।
  • Test: “something” आ सकता है? हाँ → lay. नहीं → lie.
