“much” और “many” दोनों बड़ी मात्रा दर्शाते हैं। दोनों का अर्थ एक ही है — लेकिन दोनों interchangeable नहीं हैं। चुनाव पूरी तरह noun के type पर निर्भर करता है।

I don’t have much time. (मेरे पास ज़्यादा समय नहीं है।)

I don’t have many friends. (मेरे पास ज़्यादा दोस्त नहीं हैं।)

पहले वाक्य में “many” और दूसरे में “much” क्यों? जवाब English grammar में एक बुनियादी फर्क में है: countable vs uncountable nouns

Countable nouns वे हैं जिन्हें आप अलग-अलग गिन सकते हैं। इनके singular और plural दोनों forms होते हैं।

SingularPlural
one book (एक किताब)three books (तीन किताबें)
one student (एक छात्र)fifty students (पचास छात्र)
one car (एक गाड़ी)many cars (कई गाड़ियाँ)

time (समय)Abstract concept
money (पैसा)Mass के रूप में

कुछ nouns एक अर्थ में countable और दूसरे में uncountable होते हैं।

NounUncountable अर्थCountable अर्थ

paperPaper is recyclable. (कागज़)I wrote a paper. (शोध-पत्र)
coffeeI love coffee. (कॉफ़ी)I’d like two cups of coffee. (कप)

Rule सीधा है:

Many + plural countable nouns (गणनीय बहुवचन संज्ञाएँ) Much + uncountable nouns (अगणनीय संज्ञाएँ)

Many students passed the exam. (बहुत से छात्र परीक्षा पास की।)

She has many books.

How many people attended the meeting?

Affirmative (positive) statements में “much” formal या awkward लगता है। Native speakers आमतौर पर “a lot of” या “lots of” इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Formal / WrittenNatural / Spoken
I have much work to do.I have a lot of work to do.
She has much experience. She has a lot of experience.

“Many” सभी positions में ठीक है — affirmative, negative, और interrogative।

वही countable/uncountable फरक अन्य quantifier expressions में भी लागू होता है।

There are too many people in this room. (people = countable)

“People” countable है (person का plural)।

सही: Much information

“Information” uncountable है। “Informations” नहीं हो सकता।

  1. How ______ time do we have left?
  2. There are ______ students in the library.
  3. She doesn’t have ______ experience in coding.
  4. How ______ books did you buy?
  5. I don’t drink ______ coffee.

  1. much — “time” uncountable है
  2. many — “students” countable है
  3. much — “experience” uncountable है
  4. many — “books” countable है
  5. much — “coffee” uncountable है (substance)

  • Many countable nouns के साथ (जिन्हें गिन सकते हैं: books, students, ideas)।
  • Much uncountable nouns के साथ (जो mass के रूप में होते हैं: water, time, information)।

जब शक हो, पूछें: “क्या मैं इस noun के आगे number लगा सकता हूँ?” अगर हाँ, “many” इस्तेमाल करें। अगर नहीं, “much” इस्तेमाल करें।

Affirmative statements में “a lot of” या “lots of” दोनों countable और uncountable nouns के साथ काम करते हैं और “much” से ज़्यादा natural लगते हैं।
