The Order of Adjectives: Why "Big Red Car" Sounds Right

Adjectives का सही order सीखें — opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material और purpose के clear rules, examples और practice के साथ।

English Grammar , Writing Skills 6 min read

Adjectives nouns को describe करते हैं — यह basic बात है। लेकिन problem तब आती है जब एक noun से पहले दो या तीन adjectives आ जाएँ।

❌ a red big car
✅ a big red car

❌ an old beautiful Indian temple
✅ a beautiful old Indian temple

English speakers adjective order को अक्सर naturally follow करते हैं। Learners और exam candidates के लिए यह rule useful है क्योंकि गलत order meaning को पूरी तरह नहीं बिगाड़ता, लेकिन sentence unnatural लगता है।

Rule box: जब noun से पहले कई adjectives आएँ, common order होता है: opinion → size → age → shape → colour → origin → material → purpose → noun.

Memory chain:

Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Colour, Origin, Material, Purpose, Noun

Examples:

a lovely little cottage
a beautiful old Indian temple
a small round wooden table
two lovely little black kittens

Opinion adjectives factual adjectives से पहले आते हैं:

a beautiful old house
not: an old beautiful house

CategoryMeaningExamples
Opinionjudgement/feelingbeautiful, lovely, ugly, useful
Sizesizebig, small, tiny, huge
Ageageold, young, new, ancient
Shapeshape/formround, square, flat, narrow
Colourcolourred, black, blue, golden
Originplace/nationalityIndian, Japanese, Italian
Materialmaterialwooden, cotton, metal, silk
Purposeuse/functionsleeping bag, racing car, writing desk

Full pattern:

Determiner + opinion + size + age + shape + colour + origin + material + purpose + noun

हर sentence में सभी categories नहीं आतीं। Usually दो या तीन adjectives काफी होते हैं।

Most exam questions में adjectives noun से पहले होते हैं।

a big red car
a small round wooden table
an expensive Italian leather bag

अगर adjectives linking verb के बाद आते हैं, तो order इतना strict नहीं लगता; वे अलग-अलग qualities बताते हैं।

The car is big and red.
The temple is beautiful, old, and Indian.

लेकिन noun से पहले phrase बने तो usual order follow करें:

a beautiful old Indian temple

Coordinate adjectives में comma आ सकता है:

a long, difficult journey

लेकिन cumulative adjective order में generally comma नहीं लगता:

a beautiful old Indian temple
a small round wooden table

Simple test: अगर adjectives के बीच and naturally आ सकता है, comma possible है। अगर adjectives fixed order में noun तक build कर रहे हैं, comma avoid करें।

Exam में यह method use करें:

  1. जिस noun को describe किया जा रहा है, उसे identify करें।
  2. उसके पहले आने वाले adjectives list करें।
  3. Categories पहचानें: opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose.
  4. Opinion को factual categories से पहले रखें।
  5. Phrase दोबारा पढ़ें — क्या यह natural लग रहा है?

Example 1:

red / big / car

  • big = size
  • red = colour

Correct:

a big red car

Example 2:

old / beautiful / Indian / temple

  • beautiful = opinion
  • old = age
  • Indian = origin

Correct:

a beautiful old Indian temple

Example 3:

wooden / small / round / table

  • small = size
  • round = shape
  • wooden = material

Correct:

a small round wooden table

✅ She bought a big red car.
❌ She bought a red big car.

✅ We visited a beautiful old Indian temple.
❌ We visited an old beautiful Indian temple.

✅ He placed the vase on a small round wooden table.
❌ He placed the vase on a wooden small round table.

✅ Two lovely little black kittens were sleeping.
❌ Two black little lovely kittens were sleeping.

More correct examples:

She wore an elegant long blue dress.
They live in a large modern glass building.
He bought a new Japanese sports car.
We need a useful small reading lamp.

❌ an old beautiful house
✅ a beautiful old house

Opinion usually पहले आता है।

❌ a wooden small round table
✅ a small round wooden table

Material noun के करीब आता है, size और shape उससे पहले।

Purpose word often noun के ठीक पास होता है:

a sleeping bag
a racing car
a writing desk

अगर कोई और adjective हो, तो वह purpose word से पहले आएगा:

a new sleeping bag
a fast racing car

Long adjective strings technically possible हैं, लेकिन writing heavy हो जाती है।

a beautiful small old round red Italian wooden writing desk

Order सही हो सकता है, लेकिन style खराब लगेगी। Better writing में phrase को छोटा करें या separate sentence use करें।
