The Rule of Parallelism: Why Lists Must Match

English grammar में parallelism rule समझें: lists, paired structures और comparisons को grammatically balanced कैसे रखें, examples और practice के साथ।

English Grammar , Writing Skills 8 min read

Parallelism वह grammar rule है जो balanced lists और clean sentences के पीछे काम करता है।

Weak: She likes reading, swimming, and to dance.
Better: She likes reading, swimming, and dancing.

Rule box: Equal ideas को equal forms में रखें: noun with noun, verb with verb, adjective with adjective, phrase with phrase, clause with clause.

Compare करें:

Weak: The job requires skill, patience, and being careful.
Better: The job requires skill, patience, and care.

Better sentence में तीनों items nouns हैं। Sentence smoother और clearer हो जाता है।

Parallelism अक्सर इन जगहों पर आता है:

  • and या or वाली lists
  • paired structures जैसे either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also
  • than या as…as वाली comparisons
  • formal writing में repeated phrases
  • bullet points, headings, instructions

Rule simple है, लेकिन application subtle हो सकता है। हमेशा पूछें: कौन-से ideas equal हैं, और क्या उनके forms match कर रहे हैं?

Uneven FormParallel FormPattern
reading, swimming, and to dancereading, swimming, and dancinggerund + gerund + gerund
honest, intelligent, and works hardhonest, intelligent, and hardworkingadjective + adjective + adjective
skill, patience, and being carefulskill, patience, and carenoun + noun + noun
to plan, writing, and reviewto plan, to write, and to reviewinfinitive + infinitive + infinitive

List में different forms हो सकते हैं, लेकिन जो items equal function कर रहे हैं, उन्हें match करना चाहिए।

जब subject कई actions करता है, verbs matching form में रखें:

Better: She opened the file, checked the data, and sent the report.
Weak: She opened the file, checked the data, and was sending the report.

Weak version tense/aspect change करता है without reason। अगर time relationship सच में different है, change correct हो सकता है। लेकिन equal actions हों तो forms parallel रखें।

जब कई words same noun या subject को describe करें, grammatical category match होनी चाहिए:

Weak: He is honest, intelligent, and works hard.
Better: He is honest, intelligent, and hardworking.

पहले दो items adjectives हैं; तीसरा verb phrase है। Better version में तीनों adjectives हैं।

Correlative conjunctions में balance especially important है:

Weak: Either study hard or you will fail.
Better: Either study hard or accept failure.

Better sentence verb phrase with verb phrase balance करता है।

Other pairs:

neither rich nor famous
not only accurate but also clear
both in the classroom and at home

Pair के दोनों halves के बाद आने वाले words similar grammatical shape में होने चाहिए।

Comparisons में matching things compare करें:

Weak: Her explanation is clearer than the teacher.
Better: Her explanation is clearer than the teacher’s explanation.
Also better: Her explanation is clearer than the teacher’s.

Weak sentence explanation को person से compare करता हुआ लगता है। Parallelism comparison को logical बनाता है।

Parallelism errors spot करने के लिए यह method use करें:

  1. List, pair या comparison find करें.
  2. Equal items identify करें.
  3. उनके forms label करें: noun, adjective, verb phrase, infinitive, gerund, clause आदि.
  4. Matching items को matching forms में बदलें.
  5. Sentence को mentally read करें और rhythm check करें.
  6. Meaning change न हो, यह confirm करें.

She likes reading, swimming, and to dance.

Equal items activities हैं after likes. एक form choose करें:

She likes reading, swimming, and dancing.

He is honest, intelligent, and works hard.

पहले दो items adjectives हैं। तीसरे को भी adjective-like बनाएं:

He is honest, intelligent, and hardworking.

The job requires skill, patience, and being careful.

पहले दो items nouns हैं। तीसरे को भी noun बनाएं:

The job requires skill, patience, and care.

  1. She likes reading, swimming, and dancing.
    तीनों activities gerunds हैं।

  2. He is honest, intelligent, and hardworking.
    तीनों qualities adjectives हैं।

  3. Either study hard or accept failure.
    दोनों sides verb phrases हैं।

  4. The job requires skill, patience, and care.
    तीनों requirements nouns हैं।

  5. The course teaches students to read carefully, write clearly, and speak confidently.
    तीनों infinitive verb phrases match करते हैं।

  6. She opened the laptop, checked the email, and replied to the client.
तीन simple past verbs equal actions show करते हैं।

  7. The plan is practical, affordable, and easy to explain.
    Descriptors balanced हैं।

  8. This rule is useful not only for exams but also for writing.
    दोनों prepositional phrases match करते हैं।

  9. His work is better than mine.
    Work को work से compare किया गया है।

  10. We need someone who can analyze data, explain results, and improve the process.
तीन verb phrases same ability describe करते हैं।

Weak: She likes reading, swimming, and to dance.
Better: She likes reading, swimming, and dancing.
Also possible: She likes to read, to swim, and to dance.

दोनों corrected versions parallel हैं। Context के हिसाब से natural option choose करें।

Weak: He is honest, intelligent, and works hard.
Better: He is honest, intelligent, and hardworking.

Is के बाद sentence subject को describe करने वाले complements expect करता है। Three adjectives better fit करते हैं।

Weak: Either study hard or you will fail.
Better: Either study hard or accept failure.
Also better: Either you study hard, or you will fail.

Second corrected version clause with clause balance करता है। First verb phrase with verb phrase balance करता है।

Weak: The job requires skill, patience, and being careful.
Better: The job requires skill, patience, and care.

Abstract nouns की list suddenly phrase में shift नहीं होनी चाहिए unless there is a reason.

Weak: My marks are higher than Rahul.
Better: My marks are higher than Rahul’s marks.
Better: My marks are higher than Rahul’s.

Marks को marks से compare करें, person से नहीं।

हर list mechanically identical नहीं होती। कभी writer meaning के लिए structure change करता है:

She came to apologize, not to argue.

यह parallel है। लेकिन अगर sentence deliberately two different grammatical ideas contrast करता है, तो strict matching break हो सकता है। Formal grammar questions में assume करें कि equal ideas match होने चाहिए unless context clearly अलग meaning दे रहा हो।
