Question Formation: Yes/No, Wh-, Tag, and Indirect Questions
English question formation सीखें — yes/no questions, wh- questions, tag questions और indirect questions के rules, examples और practice।
English में question बनाने के लिए सिर्फ question mark लगा देना काफी नहीं है। Word order बदलता है, auxiliary का सही use होता है, और indirect questions में उल्टा — question order हट जाता है।
❌ Where you are going?
✅ Where are you going?
❌ Do he play cricket?
✅ Does he play cricket?
इस article में चार main question types समझेंगे: yes/no questions, wh- questions, tag questions, and indirect questions.
Rule box: Direct questions में usually auxiliary inversion होता है — auxiliary subject से पहले आता है। Wh- questions में wh-word पहले आता है, फिर auxiliary + subject. Tag questions statement के end में short question जोड़ते हैं। Indirect questions में statement word order होता है — inversion नहीं।
Memory idea:
Direct: Where are you going?
Indirect: Can you tell me where you are going?
Yes/no questions का answer usually yes या no से शुरू हो सकता है।
Form: Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb
Do you like tea?
Can she swim?
Have they finished?
Is he coming?
Did you see it?
अगर sentence में auxiliary नहीं है, तो do/does/did लगाएँ।
❌ Like you tea?
✅ Do you like tea?
❌ Plays he cricket?
✅ Does he play cricket?
Important: does/did लगने पर main verb base form में आता है।
✅ Does he play cricket?
❌ Does he plays cricket?
Wh- questions information मांगते हैं — who, what, where, when, why, how, which, whose आदि।
Form: Wh-word + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb
Where are you going?
What do you want?
When did they arrive?
Why is she crying?
How does it work?
अगर wh-word खुद subject है, तो inversion नहीं होता।
Who called you? (who = subject)
What happened?
Which book is yours?
Compare:
Who did you call? (you = subject; who = object)
Who called you? (who = subject)
Tag question statement के end में छोटा question होता है। Tag same auxiliary use करता है, और polarity opposite होती है।
- Positive statement → negative tag
- Negative statement → positive tag
You are coming, aren’t you?
She can swim, can’t she?
He doesn’t like tea, does he?
They have finished, haven’t they?
You won’t mind, will you?
Tag subject से भी match करता है:
✅ You are coming, aren’t you?
❌ You are coming, isn’t it?
I am right, aren’t I? (not “amn’t I”)
Let’s go, shall we?
Nobody came, did they? (nobody negative है, इसलिए positive tag)
Words like nobody, no one, nothing, never, hardly, scarcely negative sense देते हैं, इसलिए tag positive होता है।
Indirect questions में question किसी larger sentence के अंदर होता है। ये polite या formal लगते हैं।
Important rule: Indirect question में statement word order use होता है — subject + verb.
❌ Can you tell me where is the station?
✅ Can you tell me where the station is?
❌ Do you know what does he want?
✅ Do you know what he wants?
❌ I wonder when will they arrive.
✅ I wonder when they will arrive.
Polite forms:
Could you tell me where the station is?
Do you know what time it is?
I wonder if you could help me.
Yes/no indirect questions में if/whether use होता है:
Direct: Is he coming?
Indirect: Do you know if he is coming?
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Where you are going? | Where are you going? | Auxiliary inversion चाहिए। |
| Do he play? | Does he play? | Third person singular = does। |
| Does he plays cricket? | Does he play cricket? | Does के बाद base verb। |
| You are coming, isn’t it? | You are coming, aren’t you? | Tag subject/auxiliary से match करता है। |
| Can you tell me where is he? | Can you tell me where he is? | Indirect = statement order। |
❌ Where you are going?
✅ Where are you going?
✅ Did she call you?
❌ Did she called you?
✅ I wonder why he left.
❌ I wonder why did he leave.
❌ You know him, isn’t it?
✅ You know him, don’t you?
Correct option चुनें या error spot करें।
- ___ you like coffee? (Do/Does)
- Where ___ going? (you are/are you)
- She can swim, ___? (can she/can’t she)
- Error spotting: Do he play cricket?
- Error spotting: Where you are going?
- Error spotting: You are coming, isn’t it?
- Error spotting: Can you tell me where is the station?
- Fill in: What ___ you want? (do/does)
- Fill in: I wonder ___ he will come. (when/when will)
- Choose: Nobody came, ___? (did they/didn’t they)
- Do — second person।
- are you — auxiliary inversion।
- can’t she — positive statement, negative tag।
- Does he play cricket? — third person = does।
- Where are you going? — inversion।
- You are coming, aren’t you? — tag matches “you are.”
- Can you tell me where the station is? — statement order।
- do — second person।
- when — indirect question में inversion नहीं।
- did they — nobody negative sense देता है।
Rule: Yes/no questions: auxiliary + subject. Wh- questions: wh-word + auxiliary + subject. Tags: auxiliary और subject match करें, polarity flip करें। Indirect questions: statement word order — no inversion.
Memory trick: Direct questions invert. Wh- words lead. Tags match and flip. Indirect questions don’t invert.
