Reported Speech: The Backshift Rule and When to Skip It
Reported speech backshift rules सीखें — tenses, pronouns और time words कैसे बदलते हैं, और कब नहीं — examples और exam practice के साथ।
Direct speech किसी को exactly quote करती है। Reported speech उसे दोबारा बताती है — और grammar shift होता है।
Direct: He said, “I am tired.”
Reported: He said he was tired.
Tense एक step पीछे चला जाता है: present → past, past → past perfect, will → would। यह backshift rule है। लेकिन यह हमेशा लागू नहीं होता। यह article बताता है कब shift करना है और कब नहीं।
जब reporting verb past tense में हो (said, told, asked, reported), तो reported clause usually एक tense पीछे shift होता है। Pronouns, time words और place words भी बदलते हैं।
Rule box: जब reporting verb past हो और reported statement general truth या still-current fact न हो, तब backshift करें।
| Direct speech | Reported speech |
|---|---|
| present simple | past simple |
| present continuous | past continuous |
| present perfect | past perfect |
