"Rise" vs "Raise": The Action Rule with Examples

Learners अक्सर ऐसे sentences लिखते हैं:
The sun raises at 6.
Please rise your hand.
दोनों sentences गलत हैं। सही versions हैं:
The sun rises at 6.
Please raise your hand.
समस्या यह नहीं है कि दोनों words ऊपर जाने से जुड़े हैं। असली grammar point यह है कि verb के बाद object आता है या नहीं। इसी वजह से “rise” और “raise” error spotting, sentence correction, fill-in-the-blanks और writing में बहुत common confusion बनते हैं।
- Rise = कोई चीज़ अपने आप ऊपर जाती है, बढ़ती है, खड़ी होती है, या higher होती है। यह आम तौर पर intransitive verb है, यानी direct object नहीं लेता।
- Raise = कोई व्यक्ति या चीज़ किसी object को उठाती, बढ़ाती, mention करती, collect करती, या bring up करती है। यह transitive verb है, यानी object चाहिए।
Rule box: Subject खुद ऊपर जाए तो rise। कोई subject किसी object को ऊपर करे, बढ़ाए या उठाए तो raise।

Prices rise every year.
The company raises prices every year.
पहले sentence में “prices” खुद बढ़ रहे हैं। Verb के बाद object नहीं है। दूसरे sentence में “the company” action कर रही है और “prices” object है।

- Object verb के बाद है → raise
- Object नहीं है, subject खुद ऊपर जा रहा है → rise
The river rose after heavy rain.
Heavy rain raised the level of the river.
पहले sentence में “rose” के बाद direct object नहीं है। दूसरे sentence में object है: “the level of the river”।
Exam में यह चार-step method लगाएँ:
- Sentence में rise/raise/rose/raised/rising/raising वाली जगह पहचानिए।
- Verb के बाद direct object है या नहीं, check कीजिए।
- Object है तो raise या उसका correct form लगाइए।
- Subject खुद ऊपर जा रहा है या बढ़ रहा है तो rise या उसका correct form लगाइए।
Please ___ your hand before answering.
Object = “your hand”। कोई व्यक्ति हाथ उठा रहा है। Correct: raise.
The temperature ___ during the afternoon.
Verb के बाद object नहीं है। Temperature खुद बढ़ रहा है। Correct: tense के अनुसार rises या rose.
They ___ the issue in the meeting.
Object = “the issue”। Meaning है “बात उठाई/mention की”। Correct: raised.

Passive voice में “raise” बहुत common है। -
Inflation rose, and the government raised interest rates.
Inflation खुद बढ़ी; government ने rates बढ़ाए।
गलत: Please rise your hand.
सही: Please raise your hand.
“Your hand” object है, इसलिए transitive verb चाहिए।
गलत: Prices are raising.
सही: Prices are rising.
अगर “raise” use करना है, तो object और action करने वाला subject चाहिए:
The company is raising prices.
“Rose” = rise का past tense.
”Raised” = raise का past tense.
The crowd rose to applaud.
The speaker raised the matter again.
क्योंकि “raise” transitive है, इसका passive बनता है:
The issue was raised in Parliament.
“The issue was rose” गलत है। “Rose” past participle नहीं है और passive structure में नहीं चलेगा।
“Raise” सिर्फ physical lifting नहीं है। यह इन meanings में भी आता है:
- raise a hand = हाथ उठाना
- raise prices = prices बढ़ाना
- raise a question = question उठाना
- raise children = बच्चों की परवरिश करना
- raise money = पैसा collect करना
