Sentence Types: Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex

चारों sentence types — simple, compound, complex और compound-complex — को स्पष्ट नियम, उदाहरण और परीक्षा के लिए अभ्यास के साथ समझें।

ये तीन वाक्य देखिए:

I studied. (एक clause, एक idea)
I studied, and I passed. (दो बराबर ideas)
Because I studied, I passed. (एक main idea, एक supporting idea)

तीनों similar reality communicate करते हैं, लेकिन उनकी structure अलग है। English sentences को clauses के combination के आधार पर चार types में classify करती है। इन types को समझना error spotting, sentence transformation और exams में well-structured answers लिखने के लिए ज़रूरी है।

Rule box: Simple = एक independent clause। Compound = दो या ज़्यादा independent clauses। Complex = एक independent + एक या ज़्यादा dependent clauses। Compound-complex = दो या ज़्यादा independent clauses + एक या ज़्यादा dependent clauses।

Sentence TypeStructureउदाहरण
Simple1 independent clauseI studied.
Compound2+ independent clausesI studied, and I passed.
Complex1 independent + 1+ dependentBecause I studied, I passed.
Compound-Complex2+ independent + 1+ dependentBecause I studied, I passed, and I celebrated.

Simple sentence में एक independent clause होता है — एक subject और एक predicate जो complete thought express करते हैं। इसमें compound subject या compound verb हो सकता है, लेकिन फिर भी केवल एक clause होगा।

She studied. (एक subject, एक verb)
Rahul and Priya studied and passed. (compound subject, compound verb — फिर भी एक clause)
The old man sat quietly by the window. (modifiers के साथ एक clause)

Simple sentence छोटा या लंबा हो सकता है। इसे “simple” बनाता है कि इसमें केवल एक clause है, इसकी लंबाई नहीं।

Compound sentence दो या ज़्यादा independent clauses को जोड़ता है:

  • Coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) comma के साथ
  • Semicolon (;)
  • Semicolon + conjunctive adverb (however, therefore, moreover, आदि)

I studied hard**,** and I passed. (comma + coordinating conjunction)
I studied hard**;** I passed. (semicolon)
I studied hard**; therefore,** I passed. (semicolon + conjunctive adverb)

आम ग़लती — comma splice:

❌ I studied hard, I passed.
✅ I studied hard, and I passed. / I studied hard**;** I passed.

दो independent clauses को अकेले comma से नहीं जोड़ सकते।

Complex sentence में एक independent clause और एक या ज़्यादा dependent (subordinate) clauses होते हैं। Dependent clause subordinating conjunction (because, although, if, when, while, unless, since, after, before) या relative pronoun (who, which, that, whose) से शुरू होता है।

Because I studied hard, I passed. (dependent + independent)
I passed because I studied hard. (independent + dependent)
Although she was tired, she continued working.
The man who lives next door is a doctor.

Key point: Dependent clause अकेले नहीं खड़ा हो सकता। अगर अकेले है, तो वह fragment है।

Because I was tired. I went home.
Because I was tired, I went home.

Compound-complex sentence दोनों की features combine करता है: दो या ज़्यादा independent clauses और कम से कम एक dependent clause

Because I studied hard, I passed**,** and I celebrated.
She was tired**,** but she continued working because the deadline was near.
When the rain stopped, we went outside**,** and we played.

ये sentences academic और professional writing में आम हैं। इससे आप multiple related ideas को nuance के साथ express कर सकते हैं।

Sentence का type identify करने के लिए:

  1. Independent clauses गिनिए। क्या हर clause अकेले वाक्य बन सकता है?
  2. Dependent clauses गिनिए। क्या कोई clause subordinating conjunction या relative pronoun से शुरू होता है और अकेले नहीं खड़ा हो सकता?
  3. Rule लगाइए:
    • 1 independent, 0 dependent → Simple
    • 2+ independent, 0 dependent → Compound
    • 1 independent, 1+ dependent → Complex
    • 2+ independent, 1+ dependent → Compound-Complex

  1. She writes every day. (simple — एक independent clause)
  2. She writes every day**,** and she edits at night. (compound — दो independent clauses)
  3. Because she writes every day, her skills improve. (complex — dependent + independent)
  4. Because she writes every day, her skills improve**,** and her confidence grows. (compound-complex)
  5. The dog barked loudly. (simple)
  6. The dog barked**,** and the cat ran away. (compound)
  7. When the dog barked, the cat ran away. (complex)
  8. When the dog barked, the cat ran away**,** and the bird flew off. (compound-complex)
  9. I studied hard. (simple)
  10. I studied hard**,** so I passed. (compound)

❌ I studied, I passed.
✅ I studied, and I passed. / I studied**;** I passed.

दो independent clauses को अकेले comma से नहीं जोड़ सकते। Conjunction या semicolon उपयोग करें।

Because I was tired.
Because I was tired, I went home.

Dependent clause को independent clause से जोड़ना ज़रूरी है।

I know that he is honest. — “that he is honest” एक dependent clause (noun clause) है। यह complex sentence है।

कई छात्र noun clauses गिनना भूलते हैं। कोई भी clause जो अकेले नहीं खड़ा हो सकता, वह dependent है।

The book that I borrowed was excellent. — “that I borrowed” एक dependent clause है। यह complex sentence है।

Relative clauses (who, which, that, whose, where, when) complex sentences बनाते हैं।

  8. Complex — relative clause who won the prize

Rule: Simple = 1 independent clause। Compound = 2+ independent। Complex = 1 independent + 1+ dependent। Compound-complex = 2+ independent + 1+ dependent।

Memory trick: “Simple अकेले खड़ा होता है। Compound बराबरों को जोड़ता है। Complex dependence जोड़ता है। Compound-complex दोनों करता है।”

ये revise करें:

  • I studied. (simple)
  • I studied, and I passed. (compound)
  • Because I studied, I passed. (complex)
