Why "Scissors Are" Correct: Plural Nouns with Two Parts

Learn why scissors are, trousers are, and a pair of glasses is are correct, with rules for plural nouns with two parts, common errors, exam traps, and practice.

English Grammar , Nouns and Pronouns 7 min read

Some English nouns describe one object but behave like plural nouns. A pair of scissors is one tool, but English normally says:

Incorrect: My scissors is sharp.
Correct: My scissors are sharp.

This feels strange because the meaning seems singular: one tool, one garment, one object. But the grammar is plural because the object has two joined or matching parts. Scissors, trousers, glasses, binoculars, pliers, and similar words usually take plural verbs when used alone.

The important distinction is this:

My scissors are sharp.
A pair of scissors is on the table.

The item word is plural. The phrase a pair of is singular. Most exam errors in this topic come from mixing those two patterns.

Plural nouns with two parts refer to objects made of two connected, matching, or paired parts. English treats the noun itself as plural even when it points to one object.

Common examples include:

  • scissors
  • trousers
  • jeans
  • shorts
  • pants
  • glasses meaning spectacles
  • binoculars
  • pliers
  • tongs

Rule box: Use plural verbs with the item word: scissors are, trousers are, glasses are. Use a singular verb with a pair of: a pair of scissors is, a pair of trousers is, a pair of glasses is.

So both of these are correct, but for different reasons:

These trousers are new.
This pair of trousers is new.

The first subject is trousers. The second subject is pair.

This is the opposite of words like news and mathematics, which look plural but take singular verbs. For that contrast, see Why “News Is” Correct.

PatternExampleVerb
plural item as subjectThe scissors are sharp.plural
plural item with these/thoseThese trousers are new.plural
a pair of + plural itemA pair of glasses is on the table.singular
two pairs of + plural itemTwo pairs of glasses are missing.plural
object positionI bought a pair of scissors.no subject agreement issue

When the item word itself is the subject, use a plural verb:

My glasses are broken.
The binoculars were expensive.
These scissors have a plastic handle.

Use these or those, not this or that, before the item word alone:

Correct: These trousers are comfortable.
Incorrect: This trousers is comfortable.

When you want to count one object, use a pair of:

I bought a pair of scissors.
She needs a pair of glasses.
He wore a pair of jeans.

If a pair is the subject, the verb is singular:

A pair of glasses is on the table.

If there are two or more pairs, the head noun pairs is plural:

Two pairs of trousers are in the suitcase.
Three pairs of glasses were tested.

Use this method whenever a two-part noun appears in an agreement question.

  1. Find the real subject.
  2. Is the subject the item word itself: scissors, trousers, glasses?
  3. If yes, use a plural verb and plural determiner: are, were, these, those.
  4. Is the subject a pair of the item?
  5. If yes, agree with pair: a pair is, this pair is.
  6. If the subject is two pairs, three pairs, etc., use a plural verb.

My scissors ___ sharp.

Subject: scissors. The item word is plural. Correct: My scissors are sharp.

A pair of glasses ___ on the table.

Subject head: pair. It is singular. Correct: A pair of glasses is on the table.

These trousers ___ new.

Subject: trousers. Use plural agreement. Correct: These trousers are new.

  1. My scissors are sharp.
The subject is scissors, so the verb is plural.

  2. These trousers are new.
Use these, not this, with trousers.

  3. A pair of glasses is on the table.
The head subject is pair, not glasses.

  4. I bought a pair of scissors.
We normally count the object with a pair of.

  5. My glasses are dirty.
Glasses meaning spectacles is plural in form and grammar.

  6. This pair of jeans is too tight.
    The word pair is singular.

  7. Two pairs of jeans are in the bag.
The head noun pairs is plural.

  8. The binoculars were kept near the window.
    Binoculars takes plural agreement.

  9. Those pliers are not safe to use.
Use those with the plural item word.

  10. A pair of tongs is useful in the kitchen.
    One pair takes singular agreement.

Incorrect: This trousers is new.
Correct: These trousers are new.
Correct: This pair of trousers is new.

Use this only when the head noun is pair.

Incorrect: A pair of glasses are on the table.
Correct: A pair of glasses is on the table.

The verb agrees with pair. The phrase of glasses only describes the pair.

Incorrect: I bought a scissors.
Correct: I bought a pair of scissors.

In standard English, do not normally count these items with a/an directly. Use a pair of.

Glasses can mean spectacles or drinking vessels. Both are plural when the word itself is plural, but the count logic differs:

My glasses are broken. = spectacles
The glasses are clean. = drinking vessels

For spectacles, one object is normally a pair of glasses. For drinking vessels, one object is simply a glass.

Incorrect: The pair of scissors with red handles are missing.
Correct: The pair of scissors with red handles is missing.

The extra phrase with red handles does not change the subject head: pair.

For broader agreement practice, this topic connects with fill-in-the-blanks and grammar MCQs where the visible item word and the real head noun point to different verb choices.

My scissors are sharp.
These trousers are new.
A pair of glasses is on the table.
