Exam Strategy , Error Spotting 6 min read

Fill-in-the-blank questions simple लगते हैं, लेकिन ये guesswork नहीं होते। हर blank के आसपास grammar clues होते हैं: subject, time word, preposition pattern, या verb form जो follow करना ही होगा।

Wrong: Neither of the answers are correct.
Right: Neither of the answers is correct.

Neither singular है। Verb agree करना चाहिए, भले ही पास में plural noun बैठा हो।

इन clues को पढ़ना सीखना fill-in-the-blanks को guesswork से systematic skill में बदल देता है। यह article बताता है कैसे।

Fill-in-the-blank questions test करते हैं कि क्या आप missing word को control करने वाले grammar rule को identify कर सकते हैं। सबसे common control patterns ये हैं:

  • Subject-verb agreement — verb subject से number में match करना चाहिए।
  • Tense markersyesterday, since, already जैसे time words specific tense की ओर इशारा करते हैं।
  • Collocations — कुछ words specific partners demand करते हैं (interested in, responsible for)।
  • Sentence logic — conditionals, comparatives और negatives predictable patterns follow करते हैं।

Rule box: “जो सही लगता है” पर depend करने से पहले nearby grammar clues use करें। पहले rule खोजें, फिर word चुनें।

Verb subject से agree करना चाहिए, nearest noun से नहीं।

Each of the students has a book.

Each singular है, इसलिए verb has है, भले ही students plural हो।

Subject patternVerb form
each / every / neither + nounsingular verb
either of / neither of + plural nounsingular verb (formal)
the number of + plural nounsingular verb
a number of + plural nounplural verb

Time words सबसे strong tense signals हैं।

I have lived here since 2020.
I lived there in 2015.

Since starting point दिखाता है और usually present perfect के साथ आता है। In 2015 finished past time है और simple past लेता है।

Time markerTypical tense
yesterday, last year, ago, in 2019simple past
since + point, for + durationpresent perfect
already, yet, just, ever, neverpresent perfect (common)
by the time + past clausepast perfect

कुछ words specific prepositions या structures demand करते हैं।

She is interested in music.
He is responsible for the project.

Adjective preposition decide करता है, noun नहीं।

WordRequired pattern
interestedin + noun
responsiblefor + noun
capableof + noun / gerund
accustomedto + noun / gerund
differentfrom / than (BrE / AmE)

Conditionals fixed verb patterns follow करते हैं। If-clause का tense main clause decide करता है।

If I were you, I would apologise.

If-clause में past tense were main clause में would trigger करता है। यह standard second conditional pattern है।

Conditional typeIf-clauseMain clause
Zero (general truth)present simplepresent simple
First (real future)present simplewill + base verb
Second (unreal present)past simplewould + base verb
Third (unreal past)past perfectwould have + past participle

हर blank के लिए यह method use करें:

  1. Identify करें कि क्या missing है। Verb, preposition, article, conjunction, या pronoun?
  2. बाएं और दाएं देखें। Subject क्या है? पास में कौन-सा time word है? Blank से पहले कौन-सा word आता है?
  3. Rule apply करें। Agreement, tense, collocation, या conditional pattern?
  4. Meaning check करें। Completed sentence logically make sense करता है?
  5. Full sentence फिर पढ़ें। Grammar और meaning दोनों confirm करें।
