"Its" vs "It's": The Apostrophe Rule Students Keep Missing

Its vs it's — the possessive-without-apostrophe rule, why it's confusing, and how to never mix them up again.

Apostrophes , Confusing Words 1 min read

“The dog wagged it’s tail.” “Its a nice day.” यह गलतियाँ हर जगह हैं।

Confusing इसलिए है क्योंकि English में apostrophe + s आमतौर पर possessive दर्शाता है (John’s book, the cat’s tail)। लेकिन “its” यह rule तोड़ता है — possessive में कोई apostrophe नहीं है।

  • It’s = it is या it has (contraction). “It’s raining” = “It is raining.”
  • Its = possessive (इसका). “The dog wagged its tail.”

“it is” या “it has” से replace करें:

It’s raining. = It is raining. ✓ → it’s

The dog wagged its tail. = The dog wagged it is tail. ✗ → its

It’s been great. = It has been great. ✓ → it’s

The company changed its policy. = The company changed it is policy. ✗ → its
