The Subjunctive Mood in English: Demands, Suggestions, and Hypotheticals
English subjunctive mood सीखें — demands और suggestions के बाद base verb, hypotheticals में were, common errors और practice के साथ।
Formal English में कुछ verbs और expressions के बाद verb की base form आती है — यानी न -s, न to, न tense marker:
✅ I suggest that he go to the doctor.
❌ I suggest that he goes to the doctor.
✅ It is important that she be present.
❌ It is important that she is present.
यह structure subjunctive mood कहलाता है। English में mood बताता है कि sentence fact बता रहा है, command दे रहा है, possibility दिखा रहा है, या hypothetical/unreal situation बता रहा है। Subjunctive especially demands, suggestions, recommendations और unreal hypotheticals में दिखता है।
Rule box: Demands, suggestions, recommendations और necessity वाले expressions के बाद that + subject + base verb प्रयोग करें। Hypothetical situations में were सभी subjects के साथ formal choice है: If I were, if he were, if she were.
Subjunctive का मतलब यह नहीं कि action already हुआ है। यह अक्सर बताता है कि कोई action demanded, suggested, required, imagined या unreal है।
इन verbs/phrases के बाद base verb आता है:

ध्यान दें: third-person singular subject होने पर भी goes/studies/is नहीं आएगा। Subjunctive में verb base form रहता है।
American English में mandative subjunctive अधिक common है:
AmE: I suggest that he study harder.
British English में कई बार should + base verb भी natural लगता है:
BrE: I suggest that he should study harder.
Exam और formal writing में direct subjunctive form सुरक्षित choice है, especially जब question grammar rule test कर रहा हो।
Unreal या imaginary situations में were formal form है:
If I were you, I would apologise.
If he were here, he would explain it.
I wish she were more careful.
Suppose it were true, what would happen?
Informal speech में If I was you सुनने को मिल सकता है, लेकिन formal grammar और exams में If I were you बेहतर है।
कुछ fixed expressions पुरानी subjunctive form रखते हैं:
God save the King.
Come what may.
Be that as it may.
Suffice it to say.
If need be.
इनमें normal subject-verb agreement लगाकर God saves जैसा form नहीं बनाया जाता।
- क्या sentence में suggest, insist, recommend, demand, require, propose, urge जैसा trigger है? → base verb लगाएँ।
- क्या phrase है: it is important/necessary/essential that…? → base verb लगाएँ।
- क्या situation unreal/hypothetical है? → formal English में were चुनें।
- क्या expression fixed है? → memorised subjunctive form रखें।
- क्या option में -s वाला verb और base verb दोनों हैं? → trigger देखकर base verb चुनें।
Example:
The teacher recommended that Rahul ___ daily. (practises/practise)
Trigger = recommended that → answer: practise.
- I suggest that he go now. (not goes)
- It is essential that every student be present. (not is)
- The committee demanded that the report be revised. (passive base form)
- She insisted that they arrive on time. (not arrive/arrives confusion: base form)
- If I were you, I would wait. (formal hypothetical)
- I wish he were more honest. (unreal wish)
- God save the King. (fixed expression)
- The doctor recommended that she rest for a week. (not rests)
- It is necessary that the file reach the office today. (not reaches)
- Suppose it were false — how would your answer change? (hypothetical)
❌ I suggest that he goes.
✅ I suggest that he go.
यह present simple नहीं है; यह subjunctive है।
❌ It is important that she is present.
✅ It is important that she be present.
Subjunctive में be की base form ही आती है।
❌ If I was you, I would study harder.
✅ If I were you, I would study harder.
Informal speech अलग हो सकती है, लेकिन formal answer में were लिखें।
❌ God saves the King.
✅ God save the King.
यह ordinary statement नहीं, formulaic expression है।

- be — essential that + base verb।
- were — formal hypothetical।
- rest — recommended that + base verb।

- were — wish + unreal situation।

- may — fixed expression: come what may।
याद रखें: suggestion/demand/necessity के बाद base verb: he go, she be, they arrive. Unreal hypotheticals में formal form were है: If I were you.
Memory trick: Suggest, insist, demand — base verb command. Unreal हो तो were.
