The Subjunctive Mood in English: Demands, Suggestions, and Hypotheticals

Master the English subjunctive — base verb forms after demands/suggestions, 'were' in hypotheticals, with rules, examples, and exam practice.

In formal English, certain verbs and expressions are followed by the base form of the verb — without -s, without to:

I suggest that he go to the doctor. (not “goes”)
It is important that she be present. (not “is”)
If I were you, I would study harder. (not “was”)

This is the subjunctive mood — one of the most distinctive features of formal English grammar.

Rule box: The subjunctive uses the base verb form (no -s, no to) after verbs of demand, suggestion, and recommendation. In hypotheticals, use were for all persons (I were, he were, she were).

After verbs like insist, suggest, recommend, demand, require, propose, ask, urge and expressions like it is important/necessary/essential that, use the base verb.

I suggest that he study harder. (not “studies”)
She insisted that they be on time. (not “are”)
It is essential that every student attend the class. (not “attends”)
The doctor recommended that he rest for a week. (not “rests”)
They demanded that the manager apologise. (not “apologises”)

American English uses the subjunctive more consistently than British English. In British English, should + infinitive is often an alternative:

BrE: I suggest that he should study harder. (acceptable)
AmE: I suggest that he study harder. (preferred)

Some fixed expressions retain the subjunctive:

God save the Queen. (not “saves”)
Be that as it may…
Come what may…
Suffice it to say…
Far be it from me to criticise…
If need be…

For hypothetical or unreal situations, use were for all persons (I, he, she, it):

If I were you, I would accept the offer.
If he were here, he would help us.
I wish she were more careful.
Suppose it were true — what would you do?
If it were not for your help, I would have failed.

Note: In informal English, was is commonly used (If I was you…), but in formal writing and exams, were is correct.

This is the most common use of the were-subjunctive:

If I were you, I would apologise.
If I were you, I wouldn’t do that.

  1. Is it a demand, suggestion, or recommendation? → Use base verb (subjunctive).
  2. Is it a fixed expression? → Use the formulaic subjunctive.
  3. Is it a hypothetical/unreal situation? → Use were for all persons.
  4. Is it formal writing or an exam? → Prefer the subjunctive over should + infinitive.

  1. I suggest that he go to the doctor. (subjunctive — base form)
  2. It is important that she be present. (subjunctive — base form)
  3. If I were you, I would study. (were-subjunctive)
  4. God save the Queen. (formulaic subjunctive)
  5. She insisted that they arrive on time. (subjunctive)
  6. I wish he were here. (were-subjunctive)
  7. The teacher recommended that she read more. (subjunctive)
  8. If it were not for the rain, we would go. (were-subjunctive)
  9. It is essential that every member vote. (subjunctive)
  10. Suppose he were wrong — what then? (were-subjunctive)

❌ I suggest that he goes.
✅ I suggest that he go.

After suggest, insist, recommend, use the base form.

❌ If I was you, I would study. (informal)
✅ If I were you, I would study. (formal/exam)

❌ God saves the King.
✅ God save the King.

This is a fixed subjunctive expression.

❌ It is important that she is present.
✅ It is important that she be present.

Rule: Use the base verb after demands/suggestions (suggest that he go). Use were for all persons in hypotheticals (If I were you). Fixed expressions retain the subjunctive (God save the Queen).

Memory trick: “Suggest, insist, demand — base verb at hand. Hypothetical? Use ‘were.’ Fixed expressions? Subjunctive for sure.”
