Word Formation: Prefixes, Suffixes, and How Words Are Built
Learn how English words are formed using prefixes, suffixes, and roots — with rules for word class, meaning changes, and exam-focused practice.
English builds words like Lego blocks:
succeed (verb) → success (noun) → successful (adjective) → unsuccessful (adjective, opposite) → successfully (adverb)
Knowing how prefixes and suffixes work helps you understand unfamiliar words, choose the right word class in fill-in-the-blank questions, and avoid errors like “He is an honesty person” instead of “He is an honest person.”
Rule box: Prefixes (at the beginning) change meaning. Suffixes (at the end) change word class (part of speech). Learn the common ones and apply them systematically.
| Prefix | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| un- | not | unhappy, unable, unusual |
| re- | again | rewrite, rebuild, reconsider |
| dis- | not / opposite | disagree, disappear, dishonest |
| mis- | wrongly | misunderstand, misspell, mislead |
| pre- | before | preview, prehistoric, prepaid |
| post- | after | postpone, postgraduate |
| over- | too much | overwork, overcook, overestimate |
| under- | too little | underpaid, undercooked, underrated |

| auto- | self | automatic, autobiography, autonomy |
| bi- | two | bicycle, bilingual, bimonthly |
| multi- | many | multicultural, multimedia, multinational |
Important note: Unpossible is not a word. The correct form is impossible. Some prefixes change depending on the first letter of the root word:
- im- before b, m, p: impossible, immortal, impolite
- il- before l: illegal, illogical
- ir- before r: irregular, irresponsible, irrational

These two suffixes create opposites:

|---|---|
| careful | careless |
| hopeful | hopeless |
| useful | useless |
| powerful | powerless |
| meaningful | meaningless |
| grateful | grateful (no -less form) |
❌ He is a careless driver. (means: not careful — this is correct if that’s the meaning)
✅ He is a careful driver. (means: full of care)
❌ He is an honesty person.
✅ He is an honest person.
Honesty is a noun. Honest is an adjective. You need the adjective to describe person.
❌ His kind was appreciated.
✅ His kindness was appreciated.
When you need a noun, use the noun form.
- What part of speech do you need? Noun, adjective, verb, or adverb?
- Choose the suffix that creates that word class. Need an adjective? Try -ful, -less, -ous, -ive, -al, -able. Need a noun? Try -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity. Need an adverb? Use -ly.
- Do you need to change the meaning? Use a prefix: un- (not), re- (again), dis- (opposite), mis- (wrongly).
- Check spelling changes. Some prefixes change form: im-, il-, ir-.
- Does the word exist? Not all combinations work. Unpossible → impossible. Unlegal → illegal.
- Succeed (verb) → Success (noun) → Successful (adjective)
- Careful (full of care) vs Careless (without care)
- Honest (adjective) → Honesty (noun)
- Rewrite (re- = again + write)
- Misunderstand (mis- = wrongly + understand)
- Impossible (im- = not + possible)
- Development (develop + -ment = noun)
- Beautiful (beauty + -ful = adjective)
- Quickly (quick + -ly = adverb)
- International (inter- + national = between nations)
❌ He is an honesty person.
✅ He is an honest person.
❌ Unpossible
✅ Impossible
❌ Unlegal
✅ Illegal
❌ Unregular
✅ Irregular
❌ Be careless! (when you mean: be careful)
✅ Be careful!
❌ She speaks quick.
✅ She speaks quickly.
❌ He is a carefully driver.
✅ He is a careful driver.
❌ Beautifulness
✅ Beauty / Beautifulness (rare — prefer beauty)
Some double suffixes exist but are uncommon. When in doubt, use the simpler form.
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| He is an honesty person. | He is an honest person. | Adjective needed. |
| Unpossible | Impossible | im- before p. |
| Be careful! (meaning: be full of care) | ✅ Correct | -ful = full of. |
| She speaks quick. | She speaks quickly. | Adverb needed. |
Choose the correct form or spot the error.
- He is a ___ person. (honest / honesty)
- Please ___ the letter. (rewrite / re-write)
- The movie was ___ . (enjoyable / enjoyment)
- Error spotting: This is unpossible.
- Error spotting: He is an honesty man.
- Error spotting: She runs quick.
- Fill in the blank: His ___ was appreciated. (kind / kindness)
- Fill in the blank: Be ___ ! (careful / careless)
- Rewrite correctly: He made a decide.
- Choose: The ___ was impressive. (perform / performance)
- honest — adjective needed.
- rewrite — re- + write.
- enjoyable — adjective suffix -able.

- He is an honest man. — adjective needed.
- She runs quickly. — adverb needed.
- kindness — noun needed.
- careful — full of care.

Rule: Prefixes change meaning (un-, re-, dis-, mis-, im-/il-/ir-). Suffixes change word class (-tion/-ment = noun, -ful/-less = adjective, -ly = adverb). Choose the right suffix for the part of speech you need.
Memory trick: “Prefixes shift meaning. Suffixes shift class. -Ful fills. -Less leaves out. -Ly makes adverbs.”
Revise these:
- Succeed → success → successful → successfully
- Careful (full of care) vs careless (without care)
- Honest (adjective) → honesty (noun)
- Rewrite (again + write)
- Impossible (not + possible)
