Word Formation: Prefixes, Suffixes, and How Words Are Built

Learn how English words are formed using prefixes, suffixes, and roots — with rules for word class, meaning changes, and exam-focused practice.

English builds words like Lego blocks:

succeed (verb) → success (noun) → successful (adjective) → unsuccessful (adjective, opposite) → successfully (adverb)

Knowing how prefixes and suffixes work helps you understand unfamiliar words, choose the right word class in fill-in-the-blank questions, and avoid errors like “He is an honesty person” instead of “He is an honest person.”

Rule box: Prefixes (at the beginning) change meaning. Suffixes (at the end) change word class (part of speech). Learn the common ones and apply them systematically.

PrefixMeaningExamples
un-notunhappy, unable, unusual
re-againrewrite, rebuild, reconsider
dis-not / oppositedisagree, disappear, dishonest
mis-wronglymisunderstand, misspell, mislead
pre-beforepreview, prehistoric, prepaid
post-afterpostpone, postgraduate
over-too muchoverwork, overcook, overestimate
under-too littleunderpaid, undercooked, underrated

Important note: Unpossible is not a word. The correct form is impossible. Some prefixes change depending on the first letter of the root word:

  • im- before b, m, p: impossible, immortal, impolite
  • il- before l: illegal, illogical
  • ir- before r: irregular, irresponsible, irrational

These two suffixes create opposites:

-ful (full of)-less (without)
carefulcareless
hopefulhopeless
usefuluseless
powerfulpowerless
meaningfulmeaningless
gratefulgrateful (no -less form)

❌ He is a careless driver. (means: not careful — this is correct if that’s the meaning)
✅ He is a careful driver. (means: full of care)

❌ He is an honesty person.
✅ He is an honest person.

Honesty is a noun. Honest is an adjective. You need the adjective to describe person.

❌ His kind was appreciated.
✅ His kindness was appreciated.

When you need a noun, use the noun form.

  1. What part of speech do you need? Noun, adjective, verb, or adverb?
  2. Choose the suffix that creates that word class. Need an adjective? Try -ful, -less, -ous, -ive, -al, -able. Need a noun? Try -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity. Need an adverb? Use -ly.
  3. Do you need to change the meaning? Use a prefix: un- (not), re- (again), dis- (opposite), mis- (wrongly).
  4. Check spelling changes. Some prefixes change form: im-, il-, ir-.
  5. Does the word exist? Not all combinations work. Unpossible → impossible. Unlegal → illegal.

  1. Succeed (verb) → Success (noun) → Successful (adjective)
  2. Careful (full of care) vs Careless (without care)
  3. Honest (adjective) → Honesty (noun)
  4. Rewrite (re- = again + write)
  5. Misunderstand (mis- = wrongly + understand)
  6. Impossible (im- = not + possible)
  7. Development (develop + -ment = noun)
  8. Beautiful (beauty + -ful = adjective)
  9. Quickly (quick + -ly = adverb)
  10. International (inter- + national = between nations)

❌ He is an honesty person.
✅ He is an honest person.

Unpossible
Impossible

Unlegal
Illegal

Unregular
Irregular

❌ Be careless! (when you mean: be careful)
✅ Be careful!

❌ She speaks quick.
✅ She speaks quickly.

❌ He is a carefully driver.
✅ He is a careful driver.

Beautifulness
Beauty / Beautifulness (rare — prefer beauty)

Some double suffixes exist but are uncommon. When in doubt, use the simpler form.

Choose the correct form or spot the error.

  3. The movie was ___ . (enjoyable / enjoyment)
  4. Error spotting: This is unpossible.

Rule: Prefixes change meaning (un-, re-, dis-, mis-, im-/il-/ir-). Suffixes change word class (-tion/-ment = noun, -ful/-less = adjective, -ly = adverb). Choose the right suffix for the part of speech you need.

Memory trick: “Prefixes shift meaning. Suffixes shift class. -Ful fills. -Less leaves out. -Ly makes adverbs.”

Revise these:

  • Succeedsuccesssuccessfulsuccessfully
  • Careful (full of care) vs careless (without care)
  • Honest (adjective) → honesty (noun)
  • Rewrite (again + write)
  • Impossible (not + possible)
