"Either" vs "Neither": Positive and Negative Choice Rule

Learners यह mistake अक्सर करते हैं क्योंकि वे sentence को दो बार negative बना देते हैं:
गलत: I don’t like neither option.
सही: I don’t like either option.
सही: I like neither option.
दोनों सही sentences का meaning almost same है: दोनों options reject हो रहे हैं। लेकिन grammar अलग है। पहले correct sentence में don’t sentence को already negative बना रहा है, इसलिए either use होता है। दूसरे में neither खुद negative meaning देता है।
यही main rule है: either usually positive choice के लिए आता है या negative sentence में किसी other negative word के साथ आता है; neither का meaning अपने आप “not one and not the other” होता है।
यह pair school grammar, exam correction और clear writing में important है क्योंकि इससे meaning, verb agreement और paired structures जैसे either…or और neither…nor affect होते हैं।
- Either = दो options में से एक; negative verb के बाद “दोनों में से कोई नहीं” के meaning में भी use होता है।

Last two sentences दोनों answers को reject करते हैं, लेकिन अलग तरीके से। “Don’t want either” में negative verb + either है। “Want neither” में verb positive है, लेकिन neither already negative है।

जब neither singular countable noun से पहले आता है, इसका meaning होता है दोनों options reject:
Neither candidate answered clearly.

Plural pronouns या plural noun phrases से पहले either of और neither of use करें:
Either of the two answers is possible.
Neither of the boys is ready.
Formal grammar में verb usually singular होता है: is, has, does. Informal speech में कई लोग “neither of them are” बोलते हैं, especially जब वे लोगों को separately सोच रहे हों, लेकिन exams usually singular verb expect करते हैं।
यह agreement point “Each” vs “Every” जैसे determiner rules से मिलता-जुलता है।
Either/neither देखते समय यह method use करें:
- क्या exactly two choices हैं? अगर yes, either/neither possible हो सकते हैं।

जब दो चीज़ों में से एक possible या acceptable हो, either…or use करें:

Structure balanced होना चाहिए। अगर first part noun है, तो second भी normally noun होना चाहिए। अगर first part phrase है, तो second side भी matching phrase होनी चाहिए। यह parallel structure से related है: दोनों sides equal लगनी चाहिए।
Weak: You can either submit the form online or by visiting the office.
Better: You can submit the form either online or at the office.
जब दोनों alternatives negative हों, neither…nor use करें:
The rule is neither simple nor useless.
He spoke neither clearly nor politely.
Standard grammar में neither को or के साथ mix न करें।

Traditionally, either और neither दो options के लिए use होते हैं। दो से ज्यादा options के लिए meaning के हिसाब से any, none, या no use करें:
Two options: Neither option is correct.
More than two options: None of the options is correct.
Modern English में loose speech में neither दो से ज्यादा के लिए भी कभी आता है, लेकिन exams usually two-option rule follow करते हैं।

I don’t like this film.
Me neither. / Neither do I. / I don’t either.
“Me neither” conversational है। “Neither do I” ज्यादा grammatical और formal है। “I don’t either” भी natural है।

Final rule: Two choices में से one के लिए या negative verb के बाद either use करें। जब word खुद “not one and not the other” का meaning दे, neither use करें।
