Common Error Spotting Tricks for Tenses
Tenses की error spotting सीखें: time markers, action sequence, stative verbs, since/for patterns, examples और practice.
Tense mistakes हमेशा बहुत obvious नहीं होते। Sentence लगभग correct लग सकता है, फिर भी उसका time frame गलत हो सकता है।
Wrong: I have seen him yesterday.
Right: I saw him yesterday.
Word yesterday finished past time दिखाता है, इसलिए present perfect have seen fit नहीं होता। Correct choice simple past है: saw.
Error spotting में tense questions usually all twelve tense names recite करने के लिए नहीं होते। वे check करते हैं कि आप verb form को time markers, action sequence और verb meaning से connect कर पा रहे हैं या नहीं। Nearby time expressions के लिए Since vs For और Used To vs Be Used To revise करें।
Tense दिखाता है कि action या state time से कैसे जुड़ा है: present, past, future, completion, continuity, habit या sequence.
Rule box: Tense को time marker और sentence logic से match करें, सिर्फ nearby words से नहीं।
Tense error spotting तीन questions पर depend करती है:
- Sentence किस time को refer कर रहा है?
- now, yesterday, since 2020, by the time, tomorrow
- Action किस type का है?
- habitual, ongoing, completed, repeated, temporary, state
- Sequence क्या है?
- कौन-सा action पहले हुआ, बाद में हुआ, या अभी भी continue हो रहा है?
जब ये तीन बातें clear हो जाती हैं, tense errors दिखने लगते हैं।
Finished past time expressions के साथ simple past use करें।
| Time Marker | Correct Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yesterday | simple past | I met him yesterday. |
| last week | simple past | She visited Delhi last week. |
| in 2019 | simple past | They moved here in 2019. |
| two days ago | simple past | He called two days ago. |
Finished past time marker के साथ present perfect use न करें।
Wrong: I have completed the work yesterday.
Right: I completed the work yesterday.
जब action past में शुरू हुआ और अब भी continue है, present perfect या present perfect continuous use करें।
| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| state continuing until now | has/have + past participle | I have lived here since 2020. |
| activity continuing until now | has/have been + -ing | She has been working since morning. |
Time expression since 2020 past को present से connect करता है। इसलिए I am living here since 2020 standard नहीं है।
कुछ verbs states describe करते हैं, actions नहीं। Ordinary meaning में वे usually continuous form नहीं लेते।
| Stative Verb | Better Form |
|---|---|
| know | She knows the answer. |
| believe | I believe you. |
| own | He owns a car. |
| understand | We understand the rule. |
| need | They need help. |
इसीलिए standard English में She is knowing the answer wrong है।
जब दो past actions हों और एक पहले हुआ हो, sequence clear करने के लिए earlier action के लिए past perfect use होता है।
When I reached the station, the train had left.
Train पहले जा चुकी थी। मैं बाद में पहुँचा। Past perfect order clear करता है।
English scheduled future events के लिए अक्सर present forms use करती है।
The train leaves at 6 am tomorrow.
I am meeting her tonight.
इसलिए future time expression देखकर present form को blindly wrong न मानें। Check करें कि यह timetable, arrangement, plan या prediction है। Modal future meanings के लिए Will vs Would देखें।
यह method use करें:
- Time marker underline करें। yesterday, since, for, already, yet, when, before, by the time, now, usually, tomorrow जैसे words देखें।
- Action type identify करें। Habit, state, ongoing action, completed action, या earlier past?
- Sequence check करें। अगर दो past actions हैं, पूछें कौन-सा पहले हुआ।
- Stative verbs check करें। know, believe, own, need, understand जैसे verbs के साथ continuous avoid करें।
- Meaning के लिए sentence पढ़ें। Tense mechanically correct न करें।
I have seen him yesterday.
Time marker: yesterday. Finished past time. Correction:
I saw him yesterday.
She is knowing the answer.
Verb: know, stative verb. Correction:
She knows the answer.
When I reached, he left.
अगर meaning यह है कि मेरे पहुँचने से पहले वह जा चुका था, earlier action past perfect में होगा।
When I reached, he had left.
- I saw him yesterday, not have seen him yesterday.
- She knows the answer.
- When I reached the office, he had left.
- I have lived here since 2020.
- They visited Mumbai last month.
- She has been studying for three hours.
- He usually goes to work by bus.
- The train leaves at 7 am tomorrow.
- I am reading a novel these days.
- By the time we arrived, the movie had started.
Correct tense meaning पर depend करता है, सिर्फ एक isolated word पर नहीं।
Wrong: I have submitted the form yesterday.
Right: I submitted the form yesterday.
Present perfect past action को present से connect करता है, लेकिन usually yesterday या last year जैसे finished past time markers के साथ नहीं आता।
Wrong: I live here since 2020.
Better: I have lived here since 2020.
Wrong: She is working here for five years.
Better: She has worked here for five years. / She has been working here for five years.
Since starting point देता है; for duration देता है। अगर situation अब भी continue है, तो present perfect common होता है।
Wrong: I am understanding your problem.
Right: I understand your problem.
कुछ verbs continuous हो सकते हैं जब meaning change हो:
I think this is right. (opinion)
I am thinking about your offer. (mental activity)
इसलिए verb alone enough नहीं है; meaning check करें।
Wrong: When we reached the hall, the lecture started.
Better: When we reached the hall, the lecture had started. (अगर lecture पहले शुरू हो चुका था)
अगर actions one after another हुए, simple past correct हो सकता है:
When we reached the hall, the lecture started. (lecture हमारे पहुँचने के बाद शुरू हुआ)
He works in Delhi. (regular job/state)
He is working in Delhi this month. (temporary situation)
Error spotting में usually, always, every day, और often जैसे words present habits के लिए simple present की ओर point करते हैं।

- knows — know stative है।
- had left — bus मेरे पहुँचने से पहले जा चुकी थी।
- have finished → finished — finished past time: last night.

- did not went → did not go — did के बाद base verb आता है।
- I have lived in Jaipur since 2018.
- She believes every word he says.
- By the time we reached, the match had started.
Tense error spotting time logic का test है। Tense सिर्फ इसलिए choose न करें क्योंकि वह formal या complicated लगता है।
Final rule box:
Finished past time → simple past.
Since/for continuing to now → present perfect.
Two past actions में earlier action → past perfect.
Stative verb → usually simple, not continuous.
Habit → simple tense; temporary action → continuous tense.
Memory trick: Verb fix करने से पहले time signal find करें।
ये correct forms revise करें:
I saw him yesterday.
She knows the answer.
He had left when I reached.
I have lived here since 2020.
